Affirmative therapy for LGBTQI+ individuals, couples and polycules requires understanding of the specific challenges of navigating identity and relationships in cis- and heteronormative systems. My approach centres on your lived experience, addresses minority stress and internalised stigma, and creates space for authentic exploration of identity and connection.
Areas of Support
Minority Stress & Resilience
Minority stress: the chronic stress from discrimination, stigma, and navigating heteronormative systems, has measurable impacts on mental health. This is not individual weakness; it is the cumulative effect of systemic marginalisation.
Therapy addresses minority stress whilst also recognising resilience, community connection, and the strength developed through navigating adversity. The goal is not just symptom reduction, but reclaiming authentic identity and building life that feels aligned with who you are.
LGBTQI+ Relationships
LGBTQI+ relationships face unique challenges alongside common relationship dynamics:
- Lack of relationship models and scripts
- Coming out together or at different paces
- Managing different levels of outness
- Legal and social recognition challenges
- Differences in minority stress experience
- Family acceptance discrepancies
Our work can address these challenges whilst also exploring attachment patterns, communication, intimacy, and other universal relationship dynamics.
Coming Out Processes
Coming out is not a single event. It is an ongoing process that unfolds across different contexts, relationships, and stages of life. Each situation brings its own considerations: whether to come out at all, when the timing feels right, and how much to share.
Family responses range from full acceptance to rejection to something more conditional in between. Workplace decisions carry their own weight, balancing authenticity against safety and career implications. Religious or cultural background can add another layer of complexity. Throughout, there may be grief for relationships that change, alongside the work of building chosen family and community. Therapy provides space to explore all of this at your own pace.
Transgender & Non-Binary Support
Navigating gender identity can be a deeply personal journey, and having supportive, informed guidance can make a significant difference. Whether exploring identity, moving through transition, or facing the current social and political challenges that affect transgender and non-binary people at any stage, walking alongside someone who understands can be beneficial:

Intersectionality & Belonging
LGBTQI+ identity does not exist in isolation, it intersects with race, culture, faith, neurodivergence, disability, and class.
The LGBTQI+ umbrella is also wide, and finding a place within it is not always simple:
- Transgender people who have transitioned away from previous gay or lesbian communities
- Bisexual people navigating visibility and belonging
- Non-binary people finding their place within broader transgender spaces
- Asexual and demisexual people whose experience differs from more sexually-oriented communities
- Generational differences in language, politics, and what inclusion looks like
Community belonging is not always straightforward: it is an experience shaped by all of who someone is, not just the part of their identity that may open the doorway.
AI Relationships & Digital Connection
I have experience working with clients where AI companions (as support, friend, or romantic partner) play a role in their lives. This can be explored and integrated into therapy sessions without judgement.
Whether you are navigating the impact of AI relationships on human partnerships, exploring attachment patterns through digital connection, or simply want space to discuss this aspect of your life, I can hold that conversation.
Affirmative therapy means your identity is never treated as a problem to solve. It means space to explore who you are with curiosity, in the company of a therapist who understands the landscape.”
